Costa Rica is one of the American countries that was able to efficiently handle the coronavirus crisis. In this article, we will reveal the measures that have been taken to fight COVID-19 and the means that will be taken to assure the security of public health in the land of Pura Vida and in Costa Rider Campervan!
Costa Rica, exemplary student of Covid-19!
Yes! Costa Rica is a strong model against this global crisis. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus was 10 at the time of writing. You can follow the updates from home: Coronavirus statistics in Costa Rica online. Costa Rica was active from the beginning of this crisis. Although Costa Rica saw the first case in Central America, the fatality rate is still one of the lowest rates in the world (0.8%) according to Johns Hopkins University (article updated June 4th).
Measures taken before the United-States, Mexico or…France
But, how does one explain these good results? Costa Rica reacted rapidly even while the number of reported cases was relatively low. From the beginning of March, measures moved quickly: March 9 to March 10-closure of public spaces, March 12 – schools closed, and then gradually, the cancellation of public shows, movie theater closures, natural parks… On March 16th, Costa Rica declared a health emergency and closed its borders. “Ticos” and “Ticas” were able to continually follow the health ministry’s very engaged guidelines. Note that Costa Rica possesses one of the best health care systems in Latin America, which can be explained in part by the fact that it offers universal access to care. Additionally, from the beginning of the crisis, hospitals and universities (in particular the University of Costa Rica), worked collectively to guarantee mask and respirator production and research for a vaccine. Thanks to his appeal to WHO, President Carlos Alvarado was allowed the use of the project “Act Accelerator” which works to fight against the coronavirus with the help of new technologies. An approach welcomed by Alice Shackelford, coordinator of the UN.
Post-covid 19 and tourism
Costa Rica essentially lives thanks to the tourism industry and jobs greatly depend on it. That’s why the government deployed a strategy to revitalize tourism while guaranteeing safe travel for tourists. The Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT) and the Minister of Tourism Maria Amalia Revelo presented an 8-step plan to revive the tourism economy. The health protocols will be in line with the directives of the Ministry of health, which affect tourists from both near and far, while regulating: accommodation, restaurants, transport, car rental agencies, etc.
